The programme is led by Peabody Housing Trust and runs in partnership with Circle Anglia, Southern Housing Group, Family Mosaic, Broomleigh Housing, Metropolitan Housing Trust and CBHA.
The overall aims are to improve the general health and lifestyle of Londoners living in social housing that is owned or managed by the partner organisations. By using innovative ways of engaging families and individuals with unhealthy lifestyles Activate London’s partners hope to encourage disengaged members of the community to change their unhealthy habits through community-based social activities.
The programme has three specified priorities, designed to enhance wellbeing, they are;
1. Eating healthily
2. Improving physical activity levels
3. Sound mental health.
Individual projects have specific targets for involving participants relevant to the activity. The programme as a whole is designed to engage a broad range of participants including older people, people from black and minority ethnic groups, disabled people, lone parents, children and young people, the long term unemployed and homeless or former rough sleepers.
The programme includes gardening clubs, youth cooking activities, social outings for people over 50 years old and more.
In the London Borough of Waltham Forest, Circle Anglia is delivering specific projects in post-codes E17 and E10, using Priory Court as an ‘activity hub’.
This project is targeted at women of all ages and backgrounds. The Project’s activity is sewing, specifically “Quilting”. The project aims to provide the space, support and purpose for women to collectively work and socialise together, as part of a creative activity. The current programme comprises short (6-10 weeks) workshops (during term time) every Tuesday from 12pm to 2pm. Free crèche facilities are available.

The project is targeted at older people. The project aims to improve mobility and increase activity in those most likely to see their health deteriorate through inactivity and social isolation. The project will provide social activities such as tea dances, art and craft and gentle psychical exercise. An important element of this project is the development of self-management and participants will be encouraged, in time, to take on the delivery of the project as appropriate, with the help and support of the delivery agent.

This project involves families and children. The project will support the holding of an ‘old fashioned’ sports event, providing a day of fun for all the family and the local community. The project provides for a one-off event, which will involve residents of all social housing landlords in the area.
