The Give and Take event was organised by Circle 33 Housing Trust, with the Forest Recycling Project, HEET Project (Home Energy Efficiency Training) and the London Borough of Waltham Forest. The aim was to reduce waste by encouraging people to re-use furniture and other household goods and become more environmentally aware.
Throughout the day, residents swapped an array of goods including books, videos, toys, kitchenware and furniture. Visitors also had the chance to get green in a variety of other ways in a series of activities led by the partners’ volunteers.
A recycled arts workshop was a big hit with the children who enjoyed making flowers from re-used everyday objects and keen cyclists had their bikes fixed at the Dr Bike Work Shop.
Other activities, which kept people busy and enthused about the green life, included talks on how to reduce your carbon footprint, a fun climate change quiz, information on local food growing projects and composting, as well as the chance to find out more about the borough’s recycling scheme.
S. Barrett from Waltham Forest said about the event: “Very good idea, so people give what they do not need and get something they do want”.
Bojana Vojinovic from the Forest Recycling Project added: “We are very pleased with the event, which had a lovely community fair atmosphere feel to it. We throw away far too many things that could be re-used or recycled, which means that our landfill sites are nearly at capacity and incinerators are burning materials unnecessarily that give off noxious fumes. We can all make an effort to recycle and reuse items instead of throwing them away.”
Gulsun Faik, Circle 33 Community Development Partnership Manager, said: “We have all had such a fun day while helping to save the environment. I’d like to thank everyone for coming along and getting into the spirit of things. It is great to work together with such inspiring partners to help enhance the lives of our residents.”
