The Doorstep Library is designed to help young children become familiar with books and get them interested in reading. Local families with children aged 0 - 5 will be able to choose from a wide selection of books every Thursday from 2pm to 4pm in their homes at Priory Court estate.
Many families attended the launch event and enjoyed an afternoon filled with fun activities, such as face painting, dancing and story telling. The local women from the Bees Knees patchwork and quilting group were also on hand to show the visitors how to get creative in their badge making workshop. Fruit kebabs, cakes and tea were a big hit with the guests who used the opportunity to talk to neighbours and find out more about Priory Court Community Centre and its projects for the community.
Resident G. Sira said: “This is a brilliant idea and I will bring my kids here as often as possible. The event was fun and it was good to chat with other residents, the kids even made some new friends.”
Commenting on the reasons behind the Doorstep Library, Gulsun Faik, Circle 33 Community Development Partnerships Manager, said: “So many of our residents do not have access to books and we are hoping that the library will inspire more people to discover the magic of reading. Judging by the success of the launch event there is a huge appetite for this service and we hope to see many more residents each week. We hope that this project will help in our mission to enhance Life Chances and bring people together who have a shared passion for reading."
The Lloyd Park Centre has been successfully running the Doorstep Library project since April 2009, aiming at isolated families with children under five.
