Friendships bloom at Fitzrovia planting day

Fitzrovia residents came together with a number of community groups to give a new lease of life to their neighbourhood’s street planters and flowerboxes.

New plants have been placed along Warren Street and Whitfield Street by residents who took part in a planting day organised by Circle 33 Housing Trust, part of leading affordable housing provider Circle.

More than 30 people took part in the event which involved residents including a number of young people from Fitzrovia Youth in Action (FYA).

Toks Osanife, a resident of Whitfield Street and the event’s main organiser, said: “The new plants have really cheered up our street and it was great for the community to work together on a project which has improved the area for everyone.”

Residents have always been keen on growing plants outside their homes and worked with FYA several years ago to raise the money to buy the area’s first plants.

Over time these have become tired and this latest community day gave residents the chance to replace them with healthy colourful flowers, herbs and even tomatoes and chillies.

The event was part of Circle 33 Housing Trust’s ongoing programme of Resident Involvement and Community Development events held to bring communities together.

Sussan Rassoulie, community development partnership manager for Circle 33 Housing Trust, said the planting day was just one of the events which helped develop community spirit.

She said: “Planting days not only help areas grow into lovely places to live, they also allow friendships within the local community to blossom. It was great to see so many people at the planting day lending a hand and we were particularly pleased with the teamwork between our residents and young people from FYA.”

The planting day was funded by the housing association’s Team for Communities and was supported by the Calthorpe Project, FYA, and the Tavistock Centre for Couple Relationships.
