The right to buy is aimed at secure tenants of local authorities. However, if you were previously a secure tenant of a local authority and then became an assured tenant because ownership of your home transferred to a housing association, you may have the preserved Right to Buy. This only applies if you were living in your home on the date it was transferred; the right can also apply if you move home after the transfer but remain within the same housing association.
The discount is limited to the maximum amount available for the area in which your property is located and is also dependent on how long you have been a tenant. The maximum discount ranges from £16,000 to £38,000.
