Hampstead Garden Suburb Residents Association's award has this year been given to Circle 33 and Tim Martindale Associates for the restoration (in 2007) of Queens Court.
This award was established in memory of Dr Mervyn Miller (co-author of the original edition of the definitive book on the development and design of the Garden Surburb). The annual award is given for work done to conserve and enhance the appearance of the Hampstead Garden Surburb.
Queens Court, a Grade II listed building in Hampstead Garden Suburb, was acquired by Circle when United Womens Homes joined the group. Although occupied, the block consisted of shared bedsits clustered around shared kitchens and bathrooms and had remained unimproved since built in the 1920s and was unsuitable for housing in 21st century.
As part of our commitment to United Women’s Homes, we undertook a full refurbishment programme across their portfolio and combined the refurbishment of Queens Court with another block in Hampstead Garden Suburb at Emmott Close. By decanting existing tenants from Queens Court into the newly refurbished Emmott Close we were able to refurbish Queens Court ahead of programme.
The listed building required close collaboration within the project team to balance the demands of residents, the listed building officer, Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust and design new homes fit for the 21st century. We are very pleased that our efforts have been recognised by the Hampstead Garden Suburb Residents Association in granting this award.
