A scheme to build 44 eco-friendly, timber-framed homes in Cambridgeshire is now underway. Twenty-eight post-war homes have been demolished in Sawston to make way for the new development which should be completed by the end of this year.
The Scheme will provide 34 affordable homes, 18 for rent and 16 for New Build HomeBuy, using cross subsidy from the additional 10 outright sale properties to fund the affordable programme.
Higgins Construction Ltd is building the new homes using modern methods of construction that minimise heat loss and maximise energy efficiency.
Continuous improvement in energy efficiency across the four sites is a forerunner to government endeavours to reduce the environmental impact of new developments. Circle is proud to be a leading Registered Provider (RP), using modern techniques to drive this agenda forward.
“These homes will have a smaller carbon footprint than ordinary ones and include features such as water butts, better insulation and energy-saving light bulbs.”
The Sawston scheme is part of a larger redevelopment programme between Wherry Housing Association – a partner in the Circle Group – in partnership with South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC). Funding from the Housing Corporation has been secured to redevelop the 4 sites in Sawston, Elsworth, Girton & Coton.
The overall scheme is to develop 64 Airey homes - built after the Second World War using pre-cast concrete frames and cladding - which are being replaced with modern homes in four villages across the county.
“Providing more affordable housing is an SCDC priority and I’m delighted that this development is moving ahead” says spokeswoman, Deborah Roberts.
