Circle and Barratt Homes have been chosen to transform a derelict east London hospital in Tower Hamlets into 900 new homes, health care facilities and high-quality open spaces. Fifty per cent of the development will be classed as affordable housing.

East India Docks Aerial Public Realm 4The project forms part of Circle’s work within the Thames Gateway area. Other partners in the redevelopment of St Andrew’s Bow, which falls within the gateway to the Olympic Zone, include the Housing Corporation, London Thames Gateway Development Corporation and the Department of Communities and Local Government.

Master planning for the site is being devised by award-winning architects Allies and Morrison, who will team up with Design for London to hold a series of workshops so that local residents can contribute to the plans.

Fifty per cent of the development will be classed as affordable housing, with the overall development providing both smaller flats and large family accommodation.

Speaking on behalf of the backers, London Thames Gateway Development Corporation, Chief Executive Peter Andrews says Andrews Bow is a demonstration of our intent to invest in quality affordable accommodation for families in East London.

“It will act as an exemplar to other developers who share our commitment to raise standards across the Thames Gateway and deliver the Olympic legacy that local people expect.”
