A report published recently by the National Housing Federation has shown Mole Valley district to be one of the five least affordable areas in the South-East - highlighting the plight of families in the region unable to find an affordable home.
In Mole Valley, the report found the average house price, at £402,921, was more than 17 times the average income of £23,514.
Despite the dramatic downturn in house building generally, Mole Valley Housing Association is making a major difference to the availability of affordable homes in the District, with a number of developments underway or in the planning stage. With financial support from Mole Valley District Council and the Homes and Communities Agency, MVHA is currently building 18 new affordable homes in Capel Village and in the New Year will start work converting the old Dorking Fire station into 16 affordable flats. A number of other schemes, both in Leatherhead and in rural villages, are in the pipeline.
David Searle, managing director, said: "the provision of more affordable housing in Mole Valley is one of our key objectives and we are pleased to be delivering on our commitments, despite the difficult financial circumstances we all face. We are able to maintain our development programme at this time because of our local partnerships, and the financial strength which comes from being part of Circle Anglia."
