December 2011

Residents Forum annual Christmas meal

By June Stevenson, Lead Resident of the Residents Forum

Res Forum Xmas Meal 2011“Following December’s Resident Forum meeting, we went out for our annual Christmas lunch. We always invite Mercian’s MD Laurice Ponting and the Customer Involvement team and this year we were also joined by Kristian Melgaard, Assistant Director of Customer Services and John Downs, Assistant Director of Housing Services.

We all enjoyed the meal. It is a nice thank you for the tenants after the work they have done with Mercian over the past year at the Forum and other focus groups.

We are looking for new members to come and join us at the Residents Forum in 2012, so if you’re interested, visit the I want to get involved page”.

Forum members give their input into the Repairs & Maintenance Review

Residents Forum and resident Board member Andy Pountney, has been involved with the Circle group-wide Repairs & Maintenance Review right from the very beginning. Here he explains how he and other residents have been involved -

“I’ve been involved with this review from the start as a resident and later reporting back to Mercian’s Board and working with Mercian staff to ensure that we will have the best repairs contract for us.

In September, I did a presentation to the Residents Forum on the work so far to show them that we, as residents, are at the forefront of this contract procurement.

I offered Forum members a chance to come down to London with me in November to a Steering Group meeting involving other residents from the Circle group, to meet and discuss concerns and needs for each housing association in the group and to see first hand the progress and immediate plans.”

Jackie Harris and Mary Dent took up Andy’s offer and spent the day in London. Here they heard an update on the strategy so far, what the plans are going forward and had the opportunity to give their views.

“I went because it’s something we’ve been talking about at the Residents Forum for so long. We’ve come to represent all Mercian residents and it was nice to meet residents from other Circle group partners and to listen to what they had to say” said Mary.

Jackie agrees “It was a really interesting day and I’ll definitely go to another one to find out more.”

Andy continues, “At this meeting, I was in a breakout group separate from the main meeting for an important update on the level of commitment that will be required from champion residents during the months of December and January. We have formed a strong bond between us during this work with our shared target of ensuring the best contract for our own housing association.”
