The Pollards Hill Neighbourhood Plan 2008 - 10 was developed at Merton Council, through talking with residents and those who provide local services to help change the local area and improve the services residents receive.

Project spotlight

Community Cafe at the New Horizon Centre

The New Horizon Cafe runs every Thursday from 9am to 11am in the New Horizon Community Centre. It has been running for a year and has a team of friendly staff and volunteers and serves tea and toast for £1

Whilst customers are enjoying their tea, they can also access information, advice and guidance to develop their own careers, look at opportunities to return to work, get help to find childcare etc. The Cafe displays local job vacancies and staff offer "better-off-calculations" to see how much better off the cafe customers could be if they decided to return to work.

The Citizens Advice Bureau run sessions at the Cafe on Thursday mornings and there are regular guest speakers and seasonal food tasting.

The New Horizon Centre also hosts a variety of other projects and activities such as the lunch club for the elderly and babytalk; a mums and babies drop-in.

What next?

There are a number of actions from the Neighbourhood Plan currently being implemented, in particular we are working with Croydon and Sutton boroughs to develop a cross-borough Credit Union to help improve access to financial services and products for local residents.
