Decent Homes and the Merton Standard

The Decent Homes Standard is the quality standard for housing set by the Government. The ‘Merton Standard’ is a new standard that goes beyond the Government’s Decent Homes Standard and has been developed with the help of the Residents Consultative Group. It sets out the scope and quality of improvements to both the inside and outside of Merton Priory Homes residents homes.

The Merton Standard would see the installation, where required, of quality new kitchens and bathrooms, double glazing and central heating, as well as additional improvements such as fencing and an option to have an over bath shower.

Examples of some of the scope and quality of improvements provided under the 'Merton Standard':

Kitchen
If our survey shows your home needs a new kitchen, Merton Priory Homes would offer you a choice of kitchen styles, colours and finishes, something that the Decent Homes Standard does not require.

Bathroom
If our survey shows your home needs a new bathroom, Merton Priory Homes would fit:

  • a standard white bathroom suite comprising a modern bath/shower, a dual-flush WC and a wash hand basin with a choice of taps
  • an over bath shower at your request.
  • a three tile high splashback with trims to match above sinks and baths.

Heating and Insulation
If our survey shows your home needs to have your heating and insulation
upgraded, Merton Priory Homes would upgrade your existing heating system, to ensure that you have a radiator in every room in your home that needs one.

Windows and Doors
If our survey shows your home needs new windows or doors, Merton Priory Homes would fit:

  • a good quality front door with a letterbox, a chain and spy hole for maximum customer
    safety and security.
  • Front door locks would comprise a five lever mortice lock as standard.
  • The windows would be high quality units that offer greatly improved security over
    existing fittings.
  • All windows would have safety catches.
  • All new windows would be double glazed.
