Transfers and Mutual Exchanges

Transfers

A Transfer is when your current landlord move you to another home, usually at your request, that they own or managed, or one own or managed by another housing association or a local council.

Home exchangeMerton Priory Homes does not hold a transfer waiting list of its own. Instead homes are allocated to customers who have registered on Merton Council's Housing Register. Therefore to be considered for a transfer you will need to register with Merton Council first or, if you wish to move to another council’s area, the council that operates in the area you would like to move to.

If you wish to know more about registering you can contact us for advice or Merton Council directly.

It is important to understand that, with over 5000 applicants on Merton Council’s Housing Register, including applicants seeking their first homes, there is often a long waiting time before you can transfer, especially if you have a low priority.

However, you could consider exchanging (mutual exchange) your home with another tenant and this may reduce the length of time you have to wait for a transfer to a suitable home.

Mutual Exchange

A Mutual Exchange is the voluntary exchange of properties between one tenant and another tenant of the same or a different housing association or a local council, with the approval of their individual landlords.
