Beware – bogus callers and burglars target our residents

We have received information from the police and various local safer neighbourhoods teams that MPH residents became a target for bogus callers and burglars.

MPH Apollo IdentificationWe have had a couple of burglaries where burglars have gained entry via UVPC doors that haven't been deadlocked. Safer Neighbourhoods teams are in the process of leaflet dropping all neighbourhoods, but we would like to bring it to your attention and recommend to be extra vigilant.

A large number of distraction burglaries have been occurring in the area near St. Hellier estate, Glebe Court, Baron, Gedge and Fenning Courts, and London Road in Mitcham.
People wearing high-visibility vests (similar to what our contractors wear) are knocking on doors offering to check on electrics implying that they work next door. Whilst a distracted resident lets them in, the caller is rummaging through drawers looking for items of value.

We want to make all residents aware that all our contractors and staff working for contractors are wearing appropriately branded hi-visibility jackets, similar to the one in the photo. Also, all our staff and contractors are obliged to show ID cards or other forms of identification. Remember to always ask for an ID card before you let anyone in.

Important information - UPVC doors
We have had a couple of burglaries reported where the burglar has entered the property via a UPVC door that hasn’t been deadlocked, i.e handle lifted and the key turned.
Some people believe that because the door is unable to be opened from the outside, it is a sufficient safety measure. However, a burglar could use a credit card to push the bolts back or put their hand through the letterbox and use a device to knock the handle down.

Please make sure you deadlock your door. Remove the key and keep them out of sight, but somewhere near in case you need to leave your home in an emergency.

For more details about safety at home, please check out the CrimeStoppers website, www.crimestoppers-uk.org, or contact your local Safer Neighbopurhood Team.
