Circle Energy and MPH residents tipping neighbours on saving energy
Energy Saving Week arrived today at Merton Priory Homes and will be here until Friday, 28th October 2011.
Energy Saving Week is an annual national campaign run by the Energy Saving Trust to help people lower their bills and expenses that come with the energy use.
This year Circle Group, which Merton Priory Homes is part of, launched a ‘Circle Energy’ website to help our residents find solutions and avoid winter raise in energy usage.
Many of us managed to cut or lower their energy bills already, but there is still more we can do to cut the cost. MPH residents, who took part in a meeting about affordable warmth, were more than happy to share some of their energy tips with us:
- Make sure your washing machine is full when you run it. Turn down the temperature or use cold wash liquid or powder.
- Use energy savings light bulbs. There are some much better new models out.
- Make sure your freezer is full and pack empty spaces with cardboard boxes to reduce costs.
- Defrost freezer regularly.
- 'Cook for the freezer' when you are cooking a meal – one for you now, and one for the freezer.
- Shower instead of a bath.
- Shut the water off when cleaning your teeth.
- Shut the water off in the shower when soaping or shampooing.
- Turn the thermostat down on the central heating.
- Make sure your boiler is set at the correct level (Smith and Byford could provide an advice sheet as part of their service).
- Put an extra jumper or hat on.
- Switch off appliances at the wall if not using them.
- Don’t leave chargers plugged in.
- Cook with the oven full – do three to four dishes at the same time.
- Use power down circuits.
- Use microwaves.
