New Debt and Benefits Advice Service for Merton Priory Homes tenants!
MPH tenants can now access additional debt and welfare benefits advice provided by Merton and Lambeth Citizens Advice Bureau (MLCAB) within the London Borough of Merton.
The service will operate within the aims, principles and policies of Citizens Advice which is free, confidential, impartial and open.
MLCAB will provide trained advisers to work with tenants; offer home visits to those tenants unable to travel to outreach premises and will provide the service according to the procedures and directions set out in the Citizens Advice Quality Assurance Standards Membership Agreement that includes:
Initial Advice
- Diagnosing the tenant’s problems;
- Giving information and explaining options;
- Identifying further actions that the tenant can take; and
- Assisting with filling in forms, writing letters, and contacting third parties to seek information on the tenant’s behalf.
Financial Advice
- Assisting with action to deal with emergencies where there is a deadline pending;
- Assessing and advising how to maximise income;
- Drawing up a financial statement;
- Discussing and agreeing options and action plans;
- Negotiating priority debts, including rent arrears; and
- Negotiating non-priority debts.
Welfare Benefits Advice
- Checking entitlement to welfare benefits and tax credits;
- Assisting with completing welfare benefits/tax credit claim forms, including on-line; and
- Assisting with appeals against decisions.
- Access to the new Debt and Welfare Benefits Advice Service is through referral from your MPH Income Officer who can be contacted on 0300 500 3000*.
