Celebrating the community

More than 400 people from across Dorking and Leatherhead last week celebrated a fun and action packed Neighbours’ Day, organised by Mole Valley Housing Association (MVHA), part of leading affordable housing provider Circle Anglia.

The event was officially opened by the children from The Blue Academy of Performing Arts, who performed a ‘Thriller’ dance. The community was invited to take part in an array of fun activities. These included a penalty shootout, sports races, different quizzes and various fun children’s competitions such as three-legged races, egg and spoon races and a tug of war.

The afternoon event was rounded off with a big barbeque and refreshments, where residents got to know each other better. Live entertainment was provided by local band ‘The Usual Suspects’, the Loud and Proud Community Choir and Bollywood dancer Manisha Premlal.

Mr Lee Sawyers, a Dorking resident, said: “The neighbours day was a very good event for the community. There were lots of fun and exciting activities for the whole family to get into. It was also nice to speak to MVHA staff members and the highlight of the event was the racing competition which my children really enjoyed”.

The housing association’s community development team, together with other local agencies, were also on hand to chat to the visitors. Residents used the opportunity to talk about their thoughts and ideas for the neighbourhood, as well as their views on services and local issues.

David Searle, Managing Director of Mole Valley Housing Association, said: “It’s been a really fun event, which is an important part of our work to help bring people together and strengthen our communities. We are passionate about enhancing the Life Chances of our residents. It is important that we reach out to everyone, get their feedback and hear about what really matters to them. This event wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our partners and we really enjoyed working together.”

Local community groups supporting the event included the Mole Valley District Council, Citizens Advice Bureau, Dorking Nursery School and Rural Children’s Centre’s with Playlink, Links Partnership, Goodwyns Community Group, CVS, Workers Education Association, Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, Surrey Police and the Mole Valley Housing Association Resident Involvement Group.
