Right to acquire

If you have become a tenant of Mole Valley Housing Association after the date of transfer you will be an assured tenant and will not qualify for the right to buy, however you may be allowed to buy your home under the Right to Acquire.

Secure tenants of Mole Valley District Council who became assured tenants of Mole Valley Housing Association at the time of stock transfer (29th October 2007), may also qualify for the right to acquire.

The Right to Acquire gives eligible tenants the right to buy their home at a discount. The discount varies between £9,000 - £16,000 depending on the area in England where the property is located. In Mole Valley the discount for Right to Acquire is £13,500.

To be eligible for the Right to Acquire, you must occupy a qualifying property, have spent a minimum period as a public sector tenant, and live in a self-contained flat or house as your only home.

The minimum period of tenancy to qualify for the right to acquire if you were a tenant before 18 January 2005 is two years. The minimum period has since been extended to five years for new tenants from 18 January 2005.

You don't have to have lived at the same address or to have been a tenant of the same housing authority throughout the minimum period. Tenancies of different properties and even with different landlords may count towards your minimum period.

If you are a joint tenant you will normally buy with the other tenant. Up to three other members of your family may be able to buy jointly with you providing they have lived with you for 12 months before you applied to buy.
