The Right to Buy gives eligible tenants the right to buy their home at a discount. The discount varies depending on the type of property (house/flat) and how long you have been a tenant. The maximum discount you can be allowed is £38,000.
To be eligible for the Right to Buy, you must occupy a qualifying property, have spent a minimum period as a public sector tenant, and live in a self-contained flat or house as your only home.
The minimum period of tenancy to qualify for the right to buy if you were a tenant before 18 January 2005 is two years. For new tenants after 18 January 2005 the minimum period has since been extended to five years.
You don't have to have lived at the same address or to have been a tenant of the same housing authority throughout the minimum period. Tenancies of different properties and even with different landlords may count towards your minimum period.
If you are a joint tenant you will normally buy with the other tenant. Up to three other members of your family may be able to buy jointly with you providing they have lived with you for 12 months before you applied to buy.
