The 13 to 19 year old young people participated in a four-month media course, which is carried out by local organisation, Headliners Media. Participants of the course were trained in various aspects of media and journalism, including research, interviewing and production skills. At the event, the graduates proudly accepted their OCN award in ‘introduction to journalism’, the equivalent to GSCE (C).
Graduate Jack Gipson said: "The media course is heavy, I have learnt so much from start to end, what a wicked journey! If I had known media was this good, I would have picked it at my school. I want to take part in more media courses and get better with my interview skills."
Another graduate, Hariotte Hadley, added: "There needs to be more courses like this. It was fun and our skills were tested by interviewing some famous people, like hip hop artist Ashley Thomas, aka ‘Bashy’. I have always been into media but doing this course will make me take it all more seriously."
The media course is part of the Eastside Youth Centre’s wider programme of training courses for young people at Eastside. A range of activities are offered including dance, music tutoring and a variety of sports including football and rugby. Many young people achieve accreditations and move on into training and employment.
One of Eastside’s young people ‘Landry Adelaide’ was recently voted in as Tower Hamlets Young Mayor, he and two young men now volunteer at Eastside as youth workers.
Youth Co-ordinator Centre Manager for Old Ford Housing Association, Sharon Fairclough, said: “We are really pleased with the success of the media course. This is such a good group of young people to work with and it’s great to see them get their qualification. They all deserve it. Old Ford Housing Association is passionate about enhancing the Life Chances of residents and projects like this have a positive effect on the entire community.”
