Residents fills new street with festive cheer
For the fourth year running children from Newtons Primary School joined the residents of Orchard Village, staff of Old Ford Housing Association and the South Hornchurch Safer Neighbourhood police team to brighten up a cold day with carols sung around the neighbourhood’s Christmas tree.
The day was particularly special as for the first time the festive sing along took place on Broadis Way, a new road which was built in Orchard Village in April 2011.
Traffic was stopped in a small section of the road during the event, giving more than 300 children and around 50 local residents the chance to fill the street with festive cheer.
Newtons Primary School headteacher Lynn Lowe said: “The day was especially meaningful as it was the first year that we were able to sing carols in Broadis Way – a newly built road which the children named after the school’s previous headteacher John Broadis.
“Although Mr Broadis retired recently he didn’t want to miss out on this special day and came back to play his guitar and lead on the singing.”
Jan Mahoney, customer services manager at Old Ford Housing Association, said: “The carol singing has become a great traditional event for the school and Old Ford Housing Association. There is a great sense of community spirit in Orchard Village and it wonderful that more and more people are coming along to the Christmas celebrations each year.”
Broadis Way was built to improve access to Orchard Village, formally know as the Mardyke Estate, for buses. It is part of Old Ford Housing Association’s £80m regeneration of the area.
