Although Tower Hamlets hasn't had a serious incident for more than 20 years, officials are keen to stress that it’s always a good idea to be prepared.
The council’s Civil Protection Officer, Steve Crawley said: “Over 30 per cent of properties in our borough are located near or around flood risk areas of the River Thames and the River Lee.
“Awareness is the best way to be prepared for the worst case scenario and there are some simple things residents in key areas of the borough can do to ensure they’re ready for a flood.”
Residents are encouraged to find out if their property is in a flood plain. If it is they can sign up to the free flood warning service provided by the Environment Agency. This gives advance warnings of flood risk by telephone, text, fax, email or pager.
Another step residents can take is to gather together some essential items in a key place to be easily accessible in an emergency. Items could include vital medication, bottled water and a radio.
Finally, don’t forget to check if the home and business is covered by insurance so that any damage done can be covered.
Environment Agency staff are happy to visit community groups and provide further advice and information about the possible risks.
