17 February 2010 Local Councillor officially opens 28 new affordable homes in Coton

A new energy-efficient, affordable housing development at Silverdale Avenue in Coton was officially opened last Friday by Wherry Housing Association, part of leading affordable housing provider Circle Anglia, together with its contractor Higgins Construction PLC.

The new development, which provides 28 new affordable homes for local people, consists of 16 two-bed houses, nine three-bed houses, two one-bed houses and one four-bed house. 18 houses are for rent and 10 are for shared ownership*. It is the final stage of the overall Airey redevelopment that has seen Wherry deliver a total of 99 new homes for Elsworth, Sawston, Girton and Sawston in partnership with South Cambridgeshire District Council.

SCDC Chairman Cllr Charlie Nightingale, who spoke at the event, said: “I was very pleased to attend the completion of this development. I remember, as a young boy, seeing the original Airey houses being built and a number of my relations living there. Times, however, have changed and it’s good to see a brand new development of much needed affordable and energy efficient properties taking their place.”

The event was also attended by some of the new residents. Claire, a Shared Owner, said: “Silverdale Avenue is a very nice development in a quiet village. My son and I are very happy with our house which is comfortable and warm with a good finish all round. Overall I am very impressed.”

Emma, a General Needs tenant, said: “The new house in Coton has made our family complete, it has given us the space to grow as a family.”

New residents will benefit from reduced fuel bills and other efficiency savings from living in code level 3 sustainable homes**, which have been designed in modern country style. All of the houses benefit from photovoltaic panels which collect energy from the sun to turn into electricity. They also have increased insulation, energy efficient light fittings and water saving fixtures and fittings. With the help of funding from South Cambridgeshire District Council Wherry has adapted two of the houses for specific applicants’ needs.

Helen Wren, Development Manager at Circle Anglia, said: “We and have enjoyed working closely with local residents and the parish council in the design and layout of the scheme. The Airey properties were developed back in the 1950's &1960's but were just not built to modern day standards. We are committed to enhancing the Life Chances of local residents and are pleased that we can offer good quality affordable housing opportunities for the community.”

The Coton Development has also been shortlisted for The Best Small Development Award at this year’s First Time Buyer Awards.
